Herring?s end-to-end heroics give Lady Govs victory

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Driving the length of the court in 4.8 seconds, sophomore Ashley Herring's layup proved decisive as Austin Peay State University women's basketball team stunned Belmont, 49-48, Tuesday night, at the Dunn Center.

Belmont (2-1) believed Amber Rockwell's three-point field goal with 6.8 seconds remaining would allow them to escape with a win. However, after a Bruins timeout, Herring drove the length of the court with a defender hounding her and put up her shot with three defenders around her. The shot just cleared the rim and went down for the winning margin.

The late heroics by both teams livened up otherwise dull offensive performances by both squads. The two teams combined for one field goal ? by APSU junior Nicole Jamen ? in the opening 5:57. Senior April Thomas' field goal halted a 3:29 drought and gave Austin Peay its largest lead of the first half, 4-0, with 14:03 remaining. Belmont finally found pay dirt with Rachel Swishers three-point field goal with 13:54 remaining, ending a game-opening drought of 6:06 during which the Bruins committed six turnovers.

Belmont took its first lead, 10-9, with 11:20 remaining, but was only able to push that lead to six points, 23-17, after a pair of Cacy Burtnett free throws with 2:23 left in the half. Austin Peay scored the next four points to get within two points, 23-21, with 1:40 remaining before a Rockwell field goal set the halftime score, 25-21.

Austin Peay (2-2) opened the second half without a field goal in the opening 3:17, as four turnovers hampered its offensive flow. Meanwhile, Belmont pushed its lead to eight points, 29-21, less than two minutes into the period, before its offense stalled.

The Bruins went the next six minutes without a field goal, allowing the Lady Govs to take their first lead of the half, 30-29, with 12:29 remaining. LaWanna Holiday's three-point field goal ended Belmont's drought at the 12:02 mark. The two teams traded baskets for the next three minutes, before Austin Peay scored five straight points to take its largest lead of the game, 39-34 with 8:02 remaining.

Austin Peay would push its lead to seven points, 44-37, with 2:35 remaining but could not maintain that advantage as it made only one of its six free throws in the final two minutes. Belmont got a three-point field goal from Holliday to slash the lead to two points and, after a Thomas field goal, a Jessica Bobbit layup set up the game's final moments.

The two teams each had 24 turnovers in the contest. Belmont committed 16 unforced errors while Austin Peay was charged with 14 unforced turnovers. Those missed opportunities led to the Bruins' 43 field-goal attempts against the Lady Govs 45 field-goal tries. Belmont finished the game making 37.2 percent of its field goals while Austin Peay won despite making only 35.6 percent of its field goals.

Herring finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Thomas posted the Lady Govs first double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Austin Peay won the rebounding battle, 37-25, including a 15-6 margin on the offensive glass.

Bobbitt led Belmont with 14 points off the bench while blocking a school-record eight shots. Rockwell added 13 points.

Austin Peay heads to the warmer climes of Florida for the Thanksgiving holiday, competing in the UM Thanksgiving Tournament. The Lady Govs open their stay in Miami with a 6 p.m. (CT), Friday contest against host Miami.
