Lady Govs edge Mercer on Elrod's game-winning single

MACON, Ga. ? Sophomore pitcher Ashley Elrod's bases-loaded, one-out bloop single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Austin Peay's softball team to a 7-6 win against Mercer, in the Lady Govs final game at the Mercer Wingate Inn Classic, Sunday afternoon.

Austin Peay (1-2) led 6-4 heading into the top of the seventh, but Mercer (6-5) rallied for two runs, tying the score 6-6.

Sophomore shortstop Brittany Williams opened the bottom of the seventh with a bullet down the left field line for a double, putting the winning run in scoring position with no outs.

Williams would move to third ? just ahead of a throw -- on a fielder's choice off a sacrifice bunt by freshman center fielder Tiffany Smith, who was safe at first base. Sophomore catcher Daniella Hooper was intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs.

Sophomore designated player Meagan Williams struck out swinging, for the first out of the inning, setting the stage for Elrod.

Mercer had led 4-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, before the Lady Govs rallied for five runs to take a 6-4 lead, highlighted by a three-run homer by Meagan Williams ? her second in as many days.

Meagan Williams was the only Lady Govs to record two hits on the day.

Overall, the Lady Govs would total six hits on the day ? one more than they totaled in two games on Saturday ? including a double by freshman right fielder Ashley Alverson to open the rally in the fifth inning for Austin Peay.

Elrod was the winning pitcher in relief, going three innings and allowing two runs on three hits.

Junior starting pitcher Lacey Briscoe went four-plus innings, giving up four runs on five hits, while striking out four and walking one.
