Austin Peay men's basketball team ? the No. 15 seed in the South Region ? will meet No. 2 seed Texas in a Friday contest at Alltel Arena in Little Rock, Ark. The game will follow the Miami (Fla.)-St. Marys (Calif.) contest which begins at 11:15 a.m., giving the Govs-Longhorns contest will start approximately at 2 p.m.
Austin Peay received an automatic bid after winning the Ohio Valley Conference regular-season title followed by a tournament crown, March 8. The Govs are 24-10 overall, tying a school record for victories. It is APSU's first visit to the NCAA tournament since 2003 and sixth visit all-time. In its last appearance in the tournament the Govs - a No. 13 seed - lost to No. 4 Louisville, 86-64, in the East Regional.
Texas received an at-large bid into the tournament after falling in the Big 12 Conference tournament, Sunday, to MIdwest No. 1 seed Kansas. The Big 12 regular-season champion Longhorns are 28-6 overall and ranked No. 8 in the ESPN/USA TODAY Coaches Poll and No. 6 in the Associated Press Poll. This is UT's 26th appearance in the men's basketball championship. Last season, the No. 4 seeded Longhorns lost in the second round to Southern California.
Austin Peay is 3-12 all-time against current Big 12 members, but it has never faced Texas. The Govs last faced a member of the Big 12 during the 2002-03 season when they lost at MIssouri. APSU's most recent victory against the Big 12 came against Colorado in the 2000-01 Top of the World Classic.
