Lady Govs softball shutout twice at EIU

CHARLESTON, Ill. ? The calendar may have said it was Good Friday, but don't tell that to the Austin Peay softball team's hitters, as the Lady Govs dropped a pair of Ohio Valley Conference games to Eastern Illinois Friday afternoon ? both shutouts ? with finals of 1-0, in eight innings, and 8-0 in the nightcap.

It wasn't that Austin Peay (4-14, 1-4 OVC) didn't hit the ball well ? it did for the most part ? but there was a 20 mph wind blowing straight in from centerfield that knocked down more than a few for the Lady Govs best efforts from the plate.

Eastern Illinois (8-11, 4-1 OVC) on the other hand did most of its damage with bunts and flairs just over the heads of the Lady Govs infielders, including a Texas Leaguer into short left field by EIU's Ally Nolte to open the eighth inning of Game 1, which eventually led to the game-winning run.

Eastern Illinois out hit the Lady Govs seven to five in the opener, but Austin Peay turned two double plays, while sophomore catcher Daniella Hooper threw out two wood be base stealers.

It didn't take the Panthers long to score in Game 2, as Eastern Illinois put together four first-inning hits and scored two runs against APSU starter Meagan Williams.

A good example of that came in the top of the fourth inning of Game 2.

The Lady Govs ? still trailing 2-0 ? loaded the bases on a single by Beth Carr, Tiffany Smith reaching on an error and Hooper walking, but the next three Lady Govs didn't get the ball out of the infield, with the Panthers escaping with their 2-0 lead.

After Eastern Illinois scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 5-0, the Panthers added a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to end the game with a 8-0 victory, in a game ended with the college 8-run rule.

Carr joined Taylor as the only Lady Govs to finish the day with more than one hit, as the sophomore outfielder recorded one hit in each game.

The two teams will conclude the three-game series today, with a single game starting at noon.
