Lady Govs softball split first two games at Bulldog Classic

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Austin Peay spilt its first two games at the Mississippi State Bulldog Classic Friday, as the Lady Govs defeated Louisiana Tech 8-6 in the opener before falling in extra innings to Charleston Southern 4-3.

In the Louisiana Tech game, Austin Peay jumped on the Lady Techsters early, as the Lady Govs (2-5) scored three runs in both the first and second innings to get out to a 6-0 lead; highlighted by two RBI singles by freshman centerfielder Tiffany Smith and a two-run home run by sophomore third baseman Ashley Taylor ? her first on the season.

Louisiana Tech (11-11) would battle back scoring two runs in the fourth inning and three more in the sixth, but Austin Peay added solo runs in the fourth and sixth inning both on RBI's by Meagan Williams -- before Louisiana Tech added a final run in the seventh for the 8-6 final.

Smith and Daniella Hooper had two hits each for the Lady Govs.

Starter Lacey Briscoe (1-0) got the win going five-plus innings striking out four and walking four.

Austin Peay had a chance to sweep both games on Day 1, but gave up two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to Charleston Southern (9-13) after the Lady Govs had taken their only lead of the game in the top of the eighth 3-2 off an error by the Lady Bucs allowing pinch runner Janea McCoy to score.

The Lady Govs had tied the game 2-2 in the sixth inning on a single by freshman first baseman Ashley Alverson after Smith made it 2-1 in the fifth on an RBI single.

Alverson would finish the game with three hits, while Smith added two hits.

Charleston Southern scored in the first and third innings to go up 2-0, with both runs coming in on groundouts.

Austin Peay continues play Saturday with games against Louisiana Tech at noon and Mississippi State at 2 p.m.
