Lady Govs softball drop two to EKU

RICHMOND, Ky. ? The day started poorly right from the start and didn't get much better as the day went on for the Austin Peay softball team Saturday afternoon, as they were swept in an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader by Eastern Kentucky 11-1 and 5-2.

Austin Peay (9-28, 3-15 OVC) started off the game by leaving two runners on base in the top of the first inning, but it was the bottom of the inning that set the tone for Game 1 as Eastern Kentucky (24-15, 13-7 OVC) scored four runs in the bottom of the first, aided by a hit batter and three Austin Peay errors, with the Colonels only collecting two hits.

Austin Peay would answer back with its only run of the first game, as it took advantage of two Eastern Kentucky errors, with Brittany Williams scoring off a bunt single by Randal Davenport and compounded by a throwing error by EKU pitcher Stacye Trups, who was trying to throw Davenport out at first.

The Colonels would add two more runs in the bottom of the third -- to make it 6-1 -- on a two-run single by Pam Webber and took away any chance of a comeback in the fourth by scoring five more times.

Again errors played a part, as he Lady Govs committed two more miscues bring their total to five in the game.

Overall, the Lady Govs collected five hits in the opener ? all singles ? while Eastern Kentucky had nine hits.

Despite the loss, Austin Peay did play better in Game 2.

The Lady Govs fell behind 2-0 after two innings, but put together four hits in the top of the third to score one run on an RBI single by sophomore Beth Carr, but sophomore Meagan Williams popped up to end the threat and the bases loaded.

Eastern Kentucky would tack on single runs in fourth, fifth innings to extend its lead to 4-1, with Austin Peay's final run coming in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by sophomore Daniella Hooper scoring freshman pinch runner Janea McCoy, who came in to run for Williams ? who had tripled.

Carr had two hits to lead the Lady Govs in the nightcap.
