Lady Govs softball drop finale to Morehead State

CLARKSVILLE ? For the second time in the three-game Ohio Valley Conference series against Morehead State, the Austin Peay softball team gave up double-figure runs, as the Lady Govs lost the series finale Sunday at Lady Govs Field 11-2.

For Austin Peay (6-24, 2-11 OVC) the lost marked the first time this season that they were swept in all three-games of a conference series, while it was the second times this season it had given up double-figure run totals in back-to-back games.

Morehead State (23-7, 8-4 OVC) pounded out 20 hits in scoring its 11 runs Sunday and scored in every inning.

In fact, Morehead State got at least one hit from each starter, with five Eagles finishing with two hits each and three more with three hits each.

Austin Peay on the other hand finished with six hits, including sophomore third baseman Ashley Taylor's fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Morehead State played a little small ball to get out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as Bri Jones opened the game with a single to center field, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kari Quinn, stole third and scored on a single to left field by Brandy Bucher.

That would be the best inning the Lady Govs would have against Morehead State, as the Eagles didn't have any less than four hits or two runs scored in any of the other four innings played Sunday.

Austin Peay scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, as sophomore designated player Krista New opened the inning with a single to left-center field. She was replaced with freshman pinch runner Janea McCoy, who scored from first when sophomore catcher Daniella Hooper's grounder to third base was thrown into right field on a double-play attempt.

The Lady Govs also got hits Sunday from Hooper, Beth Carr, Ashley Alverson and Brittany Williams.
