Govs four home runs enough to down Skyhawks

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Four home runs, including a grand slam by Daniel Baggett in the fourth, proved enough as Austin Peay State University's baseball team posted a 13-3 victory against Tennessee-Martin, Saturday night, in Ohio Valley Conference action at Raymond C. Hand Park.

Austin Peay improved to 22-22 overall and 10-9 in league play while Tennessee-Martin fell to 9-33 overall and 4-13 in conference action.

The game's start was delayed until 8:28 p.m. as Austin Peay's ground crew worked all day to prepare the field after heavy rains in the Clarksville area, Friday night.

Austin Peay starter Stephen Huff sent Tennessee-Martin down in order in the top of the first inning then received plenty of run support.

The Govs jumped all over UTM starter Eric Walker (2-8) in the bottom half of the frame, scoring seven runs while sending 12 men to the plate before he left for reliever Adam Bowker who struck out the only man he faced to end the inning. Right fielder Will Hogue had the inning's big blow ? a towering three-run home run over the left field fence.

That early outburst provided enough support for Huff (5-4) who held the Skyhawks in check over seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out six.

The Govs added four runs to their lead on left fielder Daniel Baggett's grand slam ? his first collegiate home run. Another two runs in the sixth were provided courtesy back-to-back home runs by first baseman Matt Kole and designated hitter Brooks Hunton.

Kole led the Govs 14-hit attack with a 3-for-4, two RBI effort as he fell just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Four other Govs had two hits each.

Tennessee-Martin's offense posted eight hits as second baseman Scott Gladstone and third baseman Drew Mason each had two hits.

Austin Peay and Tennessee-Martin will complete their three game conference set with two seven-inning contests beginning at noon, Sunday.
