Lady Govs soccer drops bruising contest at Alabama A&M

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University women's soccer team came up on the wrong end of a physical battle, losing 2-1 at Alabama A&M, Friday. The Lady Govs fall to 0-2, while AAMU ? in its home opener ? improves to 1-2.

In a game that featured two red cards before the half ? one to each team ? and four yellow cards throughout the game, the battered Lady Govs could not get things going. The Bulldogs brought a hard physical presence that was even noticeable on the stat sheet in a 19-6 foul count.

AAMU popped an early goal at the 10-minute mark by Celeste Roberts, while LaTonya Davis knocked in her season's first goal in the 33rd minute. Once again, Austin Peay lost the first-half battle and were forced to play from behind for much of the contest.

Freshman Canadian Alanna Foster put the Lady Govs on the board with a 75th-minute goal off a cross from sophomore Michelle Johnson. Austin Peay outshot AAMU, 16-8, including a 9-4 shots-on-goal advantage. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough for the Lady Govs to pick up their season's first win.

That search continues on home turf when Austin Peay hosts Lipscomb in a 6 p.m., Sunday, contest at Morgan Bros. Soccer Field.
