CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University women's soccer team lost a hard-fought battle to Arkansas, 1-0, Friday night, at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.
The game's lone goal came in the 19th minute by Arkansas sophomore midfielder Kelley O'Connor, who scored on a direct kick by senior Abbey Wilburn. Defensively, the two sides combined to allow a total of five shots on goal.
The Lady Govs best scoring chance came early in the second half. Sophomore Kellie Cannon was fouled in the 47th minute, leading to a penalty kick. Sophomore Hannah Jones took the kick, sailing it just over the crossbar. A minute later, freshman Jocelyn Murdoch's shot was saved by Arkansas keeper Britni Williams, and the Lady Govs never got another shot on goal.
“Tonight was a great confidence boost for our team,” said head coach Kelley Guth. “We know we can play with this caliber team and it was a good challenge for us.”
Austin Peay's upcoming match at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, originally scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed until Tuesday due to the possibility of inclement weather due to Hurricane Ike.
