Austin Peay volleyball downs Lady Tigers

TULSA, Okla. ? Sophomore  Jessica Mollman recorded 16 kills to lead Austin Peay State University's volleyball team to a three-set sweep (25-17, 25-18, 25-17) of Jackson State, Friday, at the Tulsa Invitational.

The win was Austin Peay's fourth straight and they improved to 8-2 overall. Jackson State remained winless in 2008, falling to 0-10 overall.

Mollman got the match started with nine kills on just 12 attacks in the opening set. With Jackson State closing within 13-11, Austin Peay scored 11 of the next 13 points, seven courtesy Mollman ? five on kills and another two on blocks ? to safely put the set away.

The Lady Govs trailed 9-7 in the second set before scoring six straight points to take a 13-10 advantage. It was part of a larger 14-5 run that gave Austin Peay a 21-14 lead and they would not look back.

The third set was more tightly fought, with Austin Peay holding just a four-point lead, 17-13, late in the set. The Lady Govs scored eight of the final 12 points to seal the victory.

Mollman finished with 16 kills on 22 attacks for a career-best .682 attack percentage and chipped in four blocks. Junior transfer Stephanie Champine added 13 kills and two service aces. Freshman Kayla Grantham had seven kills, three sevice aces and two blocks in the victory. Austin Peay finished with 49 kills and a .358 attack percentage.

“We were strong offensively again in the second match,” said Lady Govs head coach Jenny Hazelwood. “We weren't as sharp as we have been lately, but some of that was due to a solid defense effort by Jackson State. They had a tough time defending Jessica (Mollman) early and she's starting to learn how to place her shot which will make her more difficult to defend as we go along.”

Shunta Isaac led Jackson State with eight kills and a.583 attack percentage. The Lady Tigers recorded only 32 kills but did post a .229 attack percentage.

Austin Peay continues play in the Tulsa Invitational with a noon, Saturday, contest against host Tulsa. Both Austin Peay and Tulsa will enter the contest with 2-0 marks in the tournament.
