CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University women's soccer team lost its opener at the Winthrop Invitational, 4-1, to Coastal Carolina, Friday, in Rock Hill, S.C. The Lady Govs fall to 2-6, while the Chanticleers improve to 3-3.
It was a one-goal match heading into the break Coastal Carolina on top. When the Lady Govs failed to clear the ball after a defensive stop, Heather Haupt capitalized with a 10-yarder for a score. APSU sophomore keeper Carley Newman played the opening frame in net, allowing the one goal and making four stops.
The Chanticleers broke things open in the second half, scoring three goals. Lady Govs freshman Lydia Gennett scored her first collegiate goal in the 76th minute off a corner kick by Alanna Foster. Gennett's goal was all the offense APSU could muster, being outshot 19-7 in the game.
Austin Peay continues tourney play with a noon (CST), Sunday, contest against host Winthrop.
