Lady Govs win streak ends with lackluster offensive performance

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? After a weekend in which the offense seemed on a roll, Austin Peay State University's volleyball team was stymied by visiting Lipscomb in a 3-1 (23-25, 29-27, 13-25, 22-25) loss, Tuesday night, at the Dunn Center.

Austin Peay (4-1) was limited to only 37 kills and a anemic .052 attack percentage in the four-set match, well below the pace they set in their opening weekend. Junior Kirstin Distler was the lone offensive bright spot, recording a team-high 12 kills and .281 attack percentage. Austin Peay's top two hitters entering the match ? junior Stephanie Champine and sophomore Jessica Mollman ? were held in check most of the night, finishing with eight kills and five kills, respectively. Sophomore Sarah Alisaleh's seven service aces provided some needed punch late in the match.

“Our blocking and offense weren't where we needed them tonight,” said Hazelwood. “I believe we had a few people towards the end who finally started to come out of their bad start, but we have to learn we can't play so up and down. We've got to find a way to be steadier from match to match. We were steady this weekend but we were challenged more tonight and when you play a solid team you have to play a steadier match than we did tonight.”

Meanwhile, Lipscomb (1-3) had few troubles offensively and finished with 54 kills and a .199 attack percentage. Sophomore Alex Kelley had an impressive night, finishing with 16 kills, nine blocks and four service aces to finish with 26 points. The Lady Bisons block proved to be the Lady Govs greatest antagonist, with 16 blocks responsible for more than half of APSU's 30 attack errors.

Austin Peay returns to action at the Owls Challenge, Friday and Saturday, in Kennesaw, Ga., hosted by Kennesaw State.
