Winthrop edges Lady Govs soccer in 2OT

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University women's soccer team was fewer than 10 seconds away from victory in its final game of the Winthrop Invitational, however, the Eagles scored on a cross for a 2-1 win. The Lady Govs fall to 2-7, while Winthrop improved to 4-4.

Winthrop took a quick lead, scoring their first goal in the fourth minute when Erin Foote punched a shot high past the keeper for a 1-0 lead. The Lady Govs buckled down at that point and began to show balance on both ends of the pitch. The Eagles fired up 11 shots in the opening frame and sophomore keeper Carley Newman held strong.

The Lady Govs offense battled as the game winded toward the half, working to create an attack situation. Samantha Northrup came up left off a corner by Jocelyn Murdoch and after a Winthrop offside, Austin Peay began to work. Senior Ashley Beck bent a shot that was block by the Winthrop keeper, but freshman Rian Barger took the rebound and scored it to even the game at 1-1.

That score would stand throughout the second half. The Lady Govs, in fact, outshot the Eagles 6-5 in the second half, but neither team could get one in.

After regulation, Winthrop found a second wind offensively and began to rattle off shots. Newman made one stop in the first overtime and two in the second. As the clock wound down in the second overtime, Winthrop found opportunity when Rachel Cross delievered a cross to Ann Lutzenkirchen for the game-winner.

Beck led Austin Peay, off the bench, with four shots on goal. Barger scored her season's third goal ? a team high ? on her only shot of the contest. Newman finished with 11 saves in net.

The Lady Govs open the Ohio Valley Conference portion of their schedule hosting Jacksonville State in a 7 p.m., Friday, contest at Morgan Bros. Soccer Field.
