Lady Govs volleyball rolls past Tennessee State

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Tasked with minimizing the points it gave away, Austin Peay State University's volleyball team did just that on its way to a 3-1 (25-19, 25-11, 23-25, 25-15) Ohio Valley Conference victory against Tennessee State, Friday night, at the Dunn Center.

Austin Peay improved to 11-5 overall and 3-1 in league play, equaling its 2008 conference win total in just four matches this season. Tennessee State fell to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in conference action.

Austin Peay's offensive efficiency was the match's hallmark as it committed just 12 attack errors en route to a season-best .376 attack percentage. The Lady Govs 25-11 second set victory was courtesy a .480 attack percentage, with two errors against 14 kills. The fourth set's 25-15 win saw APSU commit one error against 13 kills.

Tennessee State's offense posted a .224 attack percentage on the night, but 23 attack errors were part of 44 total errors. The Lady Tigers picked up their third-set win on the back of an impressive 20-kill, .439 attack percentage effort. However, that was TSU's high point as they did not hit better than .200 in any other set.

“We've stressed limiting the number of points we give the other team,” said Lady Govs head coach Jenny Hazelwood. “Tonight we were very efficient on the offensive side and it turned into a victory. We had a lapse in the third set when Tennessee State changed some things they were doing offensively and that's just part of being a young squad. After the match I told them we have to get better at responding to our opponent's adjustments and we will as we get more experience.”

Sophomore Jessica Mollman led Austin Peay with 17 kills and a .414 attack percentage. Junior transfer Stephanie Champine added 13 kills and freshman Kayla Grantham chipped in 10 kills. Austin Peay won the offensive battle by a slim 56-53 kill margin. They added victories in service aces (7-3) and blocks (7-3).

Candace Saleaumua led Tennessee State with 17 kills and a .452 attack percentage. Christian Lowe added 14 kills.

Austin Peay returns to action with a 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 3, contest against Murray State at the Dunn Center.
