Lady Govs snap losing streak with sweep of Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, Ga. ? Austin Peay State University's volleyball team snapped its brief two-match losing streak with a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-22, 25-13) of host Kennesaw State, Saturday afternoon, at the Owls Challenge.

Austin Peay (5-2) had a fight on its hands in both the first two sets. In the opening set, the Lady Govs scored the final two points to secure the victory. They trailed 16-18 in the second set, but scored four straight points to take a 20-18 lead and never trailed again. However, the final set was a one-sided affair as the Lady Govs broke open a 7-7 tie by scoring 14 of the next 16 points, including eight straight, to take a 21-9 lead.

"Kennesaw State played well in the opening two sets, forcing us to focus on our consistency," said Lady Govs head coach Jenny Hazelwood. "Once we got things under control on our side of the net we were able to open up some space. We talked with the team after yesterday's match about play with a high level of intensity through out the match and not in spurts and they seemed to take it to heart in the first match today."

Junior transfer Stephanie Champine came off the bench to lead the Lady Govs with 13 kills and a season-best .375 attack percentage. Junior Jessica Mollman added 10 kills. Austin Peay's service game also returned to form, posting six service aces in the match, including three by Kayla Grantham.

"We talked to all of our hitters about being smart when they attacked," said Hazelwood. "They went out and played smarter today and it showed. I'm proud of all our hitters and how they adjusted in the match."

Maja Kostic led Kennesaw State with 11 kills and Chelsey Denesha added 10 kills and three blocks.

Austin Peay completes its stay in Kennesaw with a 4 p.m. (CT) contest against Loyola (Md.).
