CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University women's soccer team dropped its second straight contest, a 5-1 decision at Evansville, Sunday. The Lady Govs remain winless all-time against the Purple Aces.
Evansville used a steady offensive attack to get up on Austin Peay early, converting a turnover into a fifth-minute goal by Mia Tofano. Kayla Lambert made it 2-0, blasting a shot into the back of the net from 15 yards out in the 12th minute.
Austin Peay's struggles continued on both sides of the field and Evansville gladly took advantage. The next pair of Purple Aces goals resulted from corner kicks ? the first a header by Julie Winkler followed by a header by Tofano ? to make it 4-0 after the 18th minute.
Rocky Hearst scored Evansville's fifth goal just one minute before the half on a one-timer from the top of the box.
Lady Govs freshman Alanna Foster continued her solid play scoring Austin Peay's only goal. An Evansville foul set up Foster for a free kick from 30 yards out to make it 5-1.
Evansville outshot Austin Peay 29-3 and posted a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks. Sophomore Carley Newman played the first half in net, allowing five goals while recording six saves. Junior Michelle Smith relieved her and posted a scoreless second half, making six stops.
Austin Peay returns to the pitch hosting Southeastern Conference member Arkansas in a 7 p.m., Sunday, match.
All APSU soccer games are free and open to the public. Kids 12 and under are welcome to the Kid's Zone prior to the game and at the half. Friday's half-time will see two Austin Peay students win a $350 gift certificate to the APSU Bookstore courtesy of the Student Government Association.
