Colonels take advantage of turnovers, win in OT

RICHMOND, Ky.?Austin Peay State University saw three turnovers late in overtime help turn a lead into an Eastern Kentucky come-from-behind victory as the Governors suffered a 73-70 Ohio Valley Conference defeat, Tuesday night in McBrayer Arena.

The loss snapped the Governors six-game win streak and dropped them to 8-2 in the OVC. It also was the Govs' first OVC road defeat this season.

Eastern Kentucky, meanwhile, improved to 12-9 overall and 5-5 in the OVC.

With regulation ending 61 all, the Governors scored the first five points of overtime on a layup by Anthony Campbell and a three pointer by Caleb Brown. It still was a five-point game at the 3:03 mark on a Duran Roberson jumper. However, Roberson was in the game as senior guard Kyle Duncan fouled out, joining guard Wes Channels on the sidelines with five personal fouls.

Without the pair's veteran experience and defense, the Governors watched the contest slip away.

First, senior EKU guard Mike Rose, who was kept in check much of the second half by Duncan, started to take over. He scored on a backdoor layup to make it a three-point game with 2:41 left.

The Governors, however, failed to respond on two successive trips surrounded by an Ernest Fields block of a Rose shot.

The Colonels' Justin Stommes then missed a three pointer but Josh Taylor tipped it in to make it a 68-67 Govs' lead with 1:27 left. Then Rose made a steal of an errant Anthony Campbell pass, sending Joshua Jones in for the go-ahead layup.

Drake Reed, however, was fouled by EKU with 1:00 left and he proceeded to give the Govs the lead again, 69-68, by making both attempts.

Rose then drove down the lane and slammed it to give EKU the lead for good at 70-69. On the ensuing possession, Reed was charged with a turnover and Taylor was fouled with 38 seconds left.

The Govs continued to breathe life as Taylor made just one of two free throws for a 71-70 contest. However, on the succeeding possession Brown committed a turnover with nine seconds left, putting Rose at the free-throw line. He made the first but missed the second but EKU was able to gain the rebound.

Again Jones was fouled, who also made the first?for a 73-70 lead?but missed the second, Tyrone Caldwell was able to get off a three pointer near half court but it clanked off the rim.

It ended a frustrating night for the Govs, who shot just 42.6 percent (23 of 54) from the floor, including 12 of 32 (37.5 percent) from three-point range. But the key statistic was the Govs' season-high 23 turnovers against the Colonels extended half-court defenses.

Still, the Govs, who trailed much of the second half, led by as much as four points with 3:55 after clawing back. EKU then bounced back to tie at 56 all with 1:22 remaining. The Govs then saw Brown hit a desperation three pointer at the end of the shot clock for a 59-56 lead with 48 seconds left.

But Rose drove in for a layup to cut the lead to one with 33 seconds left before Campbell hit two free throws with 29 seconds remaining.

However, Duncan fouled Jones on a three pointer with 16 seconds left and the freshman guard made all three to tie it.

The Govs had one final chance but Channels was called for a charging foul?his fifth foul?with 3.7 seconds left. EKU missed a shot inside midcourt as the buzzer sounded to send it to overtime.

Reed finished with 18 points for the Govs while Channels added 16. Duncan and Brown added 12 apiece.

Rose, meanwhile, led all scorers with 25 points while Stommes added 16 and Taylor 15.
