MOREHEAD, Ky. ? Sophomore Ashley Herring's 10-foot jumper with 2.1 seconds remaining was the difference maker in Austin Peay State University's 61-59 Ohio Valley Conference victory against Morehead State, Saturday, at Johnson Arena. The win stopped Morehead State's 14-game home win streak ? the nation's eighth longest active streak entering the night.
Austin Peay (12-10, 8-3 OVC) held the lead for most of the game's opening 38 minutes. They lost the lead for the first time in the second half following junior Brittany Pittman's two free throws, giving Morehead State its first lead of the second half, 56-55, with 1:43 remaining.
Herring responded with the first of her three critical field goals in the closing minute-plus, scoring on a layup with 1:27 left to return the lead to Austin Peay's possession. However, freshman Courtney Lumpkin responded on Morehead State's ensuing possession with a layup to retake the lead. But Austin Peay regained the lead on its next possession courtesy a Herring jumper.
Morehead State (13-10, 7-4) saw Chynna Bozeman fouled under the basket with 10 seconds remaining, but she was only able to sink the first of two free throws, tying the game. Herring brought the ball up and feinted a drive to the basket but stepped back and sank a shot from the free-throw line, giving APSU a two-point lead. Morehead State's final opportunity came on Bozeman's half-court heave which fell short at the horn.
The Lady Govs did not trail for a span of 37 minutes after following a Morehead State game-opening field goal and the game's ending drama. Austin Peay took an eight-point, 27-19, halftime lead courtesy a half-ending 7-0 run which was helped along by a Morehead State offense that did not score a field goal in the final seven minutes.
Austin Peay opened the second half with a 5-2 run, expanding its lead to 13 points, 34-21, with 18:28 remaining. The Eagles would cut the lead to five points four times over the next 13 minutes, but the Lady Govs responded each time. Morehead State only kept the lead below five points in the final three minutes.
Herring finished with a team-high 13 points on 6-of-16 field-goal shooting while grabbing eight rebounds. Junior Nicole Jamen scored 13 points and had six rebounds before fouling out. Freshman Whitney Hanley chipped in 12 points.
The Lady Govs post play again proved to be the difference against Morehead State, holding a dominating 34-18 scoring edge. Austin Peay also out-rebounded Morehead State, 46-41, including an impressive 20 offensive rebounds ? 12 in the second half ? which led to a 21-10 edge in second-chance points.
Bozeman led all scorers with 17 points but was 6-of-22 from the field, including 4-of-14 from three-point range. Pittman added a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double performance.
Austin Peay returns begins a three-game homestand with a 7 p.m., Tuesday, league outing against Tennessee Martin.
