Lady Govs soccer shutout in final home match

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University women's soccer team was shutout, 3-0, in Ohio Valley Conference play by Tennessee Martin in it's season's final home match, Sunday, at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.

The Lady Govs fall 1-12-4 with an 0-5-2 league mark, while the Skyhawks improve to 8-6 with a 5-2 OVC clip.

“It's been the story of our season – another disappointing loss,” Lady Govs head coach Kelley Guth. “I don't think we played our best soccer today, so the result was indicative of that. I think we're a more competitive team than the result today. I think, at the end of the day, you have to come out and get better with each game. We weren't that team today.”

The Skyhawks outplayed the Lady Govs statistically, holding a 20-8 shots advantage, including an 8-2 shots-on-goal advantage. UT Martin also managed five corner kicks in the match.

Austin Peay allowed the first goal on a poor clear by the defense. UT Martin's Melissa Govea took the ball, inside the box, and scored it in the 18th minute. After that goal, Austin Peay held the Skyhawks for the rest of the half.

In the second half, UTM took advantage of an Austin Peay foul in the box, as Stephanie Nilica scored on a penalty kick. Danielle Rogers scored the final goal off a corner kick in the 73rd minute.

Govea led UT Martin with five shots, while Kendyl Wilson add four shots off the bench.

Freshman Danielle Roos has three shots to lead the Lady Govs. Each of her shots came on free kicks following UTM fouls. Senior Lauren Moon and junior Michelle Johnson each had two shots.

Austin Peay closes out its season with a 7 p.m., Friday match, at Jacksonville State. That game was rescheduled from Oct. 9.

“We would like to finish the season on a high note,” Guth said. “It's been disappointing, but we're going to try and prepare as best we can for our final game.”
