Lady Govs softball lose opener at War Eagle Classic

AUBURN, Ala. ? Austin Peay's softball team gave up runs in five of the six innings it played Friday afternoon, as the Lady Govs lost to Winthrop 13-2, in the first day of play at the Auburn University War Eagle Classic.

Despite hitting the ball much better than last weekend, Austin Peay (0-5) was held hitless for the second time this season, while a trio of its pitchers were roughed up for 12 hits ? including three home runs.

Three of the five walks came in the bottom of the third inning for the Lady Govs, as they trailed 4-0.

Sophomore Randal Davenport, junior Brittany Williams and senior Krista Henke opened the inning with back-to-back-to-back walks to load the bases with no one out against Winthrop (3-2), but the Lady Govs couldn't come up the a base hit, with Davenport scoring on an infield out by junior Daniella Hooper and Williams scoring on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by sophomore Ashley Alverson to cut the margin to 4-2.

That would be as close as the Lady Govs would get, as Austin Peay relief pitcher junior Abby Mabry hit the first batter of the fourth inning and walked the next, that was followed up by a three-run homer to right center by Winthrop centerfielder Tessa Thomas ? her second of the game.

Winthrop would add two more runs in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth, highlighted by the second three-run home run of the day for Winthrop, this time from Taylor Wright.

The Lady Eagles, after failing to score in the first inning, scored two runs in each of the next two innings off APSU starter freshman Ashley Bolda (0-3) ? including Thomas' first home run of the season.

Austin Peay threatened in the bottom of the second, when freshman Catie Cozart reached on a one-out error and sophomore Tiffany Smith followed with a walk, but Samantha Butts lined out to shortstop and Jessica Ryan struck out to end the threat.

Things won't get any easier for the Lady Govs Saturday, as they play tournament host Auburn at 3 p.m., followed by a 5:30 p.m., tilt versus Purdue.
