CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University women's track and field team will travel to Charleston, Ill., this weekend, to compete in the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Eastern Illinois. The meet will begin at 4 p.m., Friday.
“Our goal for this meet is the same as any other,” said head coach Doug Molnar. “If we go out and get as many personal bests as we can, we will have a successful meet.”
Leading the Lady Govs into the championships is junior Amanda McCoy, who currently has the OVC's second-best mark in the 55-meter hurdles (8.32 seconds) and ranks third in the high jump with a 1.55 meter mark (5-04.00). The Lady Govs also will look to junior vaulter Carrie Burggraf, whose 12-00.00 mark is second in the conference this season, only three inches behind the leader. Unfortunately, Burggraf and senior distance runner Bertha Castillo are day-to-day with injuries.
“We're a little banged-up, but we'll be ready,” said Molnar. “I expect big things out of McCoy in the hurdles and the high jump. Our medley relay team of (seniors) Melissa Nobbs, Tameeka Southern, (sophomore) Chiamaka Obi and (freshman) Janelle Avery has a great chance to bring home a first-place finish. The conference meet is always the highlight of our season; we just have to take it one day at a time.”
