Lady Govs softball use big inning to earn split in doubleheader with MTSU

CLARKSVILLE -- Austin Peay used a six-run fourth inning in Game 2 to earn a split of its doubleheader with Middle Tennessee on Tuesday after at Lady Govs Field, winning the nightcap 7-4 after dropping the opener 5-0.

Austin Peay (6-17) trailed 2-1 heading into the fourth inning of Game 2, but took advantage of two Blue Raider errors, along with three hits of its own to take the lead for good 7-2.

Junior Daniella Hooper opened the fourth inning with a single, but it was the Lady Govs taking advantage of two ensuing MTSU (5-14) errors by the Blue Raider infield that opened the door for the big inning.

Juniors Ashley Taylor and Brittany Williams had RBI singles in the inning, while sophomore drove in a run with a bases loaded walk and Hooper recorded an RBI on a sacrifice fly to center.

Lacey Briscoe got the win in relief, as the senior came in for starter Ashley Elrod, in only her second appearance of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery last year.

Middle Tennessee would cut the margin to 7-4 with two runs in the top of the fifth inning, but freshman pitcher Ashley Bloda came in and pitched two and two-thirds innings of shutout relief to pick up her first college save.

Austin Peay had jumped out 1-0 in the first, with Taylor opening the inning with a base hit and later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Smith.

Taylor and Hooper would finish the game with two hits each, while Smith had two RBIs.

MTSU took its only lead of the second game by scoring two runs in the top of the third.

In Game 1, Middle Tennessee took advantage of four Austin Peay errors in the second inning to score three unearned runs on its way to the 5-0 win.

Austin Peay did have chances in the opener despite recording only three hits in the contest ? singles by Taylor, Smith and freshman Catie Cozart -- it left eight runners on base ? including five in scoring position.
