Austin Peay hosts Spring Fling

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University women's track and field team hosted its first home meet of the outdoor season, the Spring Fling, Saturday, at Governors Stadium.

In the field events, the Lady Govs were again led by NCAA Regional qualifier junior Carrie Burggraf, who won the pole vault with a 3.70 meter (12-01.50) mark. Fellow junior Molly Bartkiewicz (3.55 meters) and freshman Briana Lococo (3.05 meters) finished second and third, respectively. Freshman Erica Rose finished second in the discus with a 39.26 meter (128-09.00) throw.

“Carrie is becoming consistent above 12 feet,” said head coach Doug Molnar. “The next stop is 13 feet. Rose has opened her career beautifully; in her first two weeks, she won and placed second and it's hard to top that.”

On the track, the Lady Govs were led by junior Amanda McCoy, who won the 100-meter hurdles with a 14.30 mark. Freshman Janelle Avery finished third in the 3000-meter run with a 10:26.54 mark while senior Bertha Castillo finished fifth at 10:30.42. Both the 4x100- (48.15) and 4x400-meter (3:56.47) relay teams finished third.

“McCoy's getting better each week,” said Molnar. “Both relay teams did a nice job; the 4x400 relay wasn't this fast until the conference championships last year. Avery and Castillo ran nice races; Avery was with the leaders until the last lap in the 1500-meter run, but she got knocked down. She battled back and had a good race in the 3000 though.”

Molnar was pleased with the performances of his team.

“Overall, we ran aggressively,” said Molnar. “We competed hard in each event. Alabama A&M, Vanderbilt and Belmont were all here and we hung tough with them in each event. We did an outstanding job.”
