WOODSTOCK, Ga. ? Austin Peay's softball team closed out its run at the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic in fine fashion Sunday morning, as the Lady Govs shutout Bowling Green 1-0, to finish the classic with a 4-1 record and a third place overall finish behind champions Georgia Tech and second place Purdue in the 19-team field.
In what has been the norm this weekend, Austin Peay (5-12) got a strong pitching performance ? backed by errorless defense ? and just enough offense to come away with the victory.
For the second straight day junior Abby Mabry was masterful in the circle, as the lefthander held the Falcons to three hits in six and two-thirds innings of work, while walking two, striking out five and getting 11 groundball outs with her drop ball.
Overall on the weekend, Mabry went 2-0, with a 0.81 earned run average, giving up only 11 hits in 17.1 innings of work. She also struck out 14 and walked only three.
For her efforts, Mabry was named to the Buzz Classic All-Tournament team.
Austin Peay would score the games' only run in the bottom of the second inning, with freshman Jessica Ryan collecting a one-out single and moved into scoring position by stealing second base. She later moved to third on a wild pitch and after Bowling Green secured the second out of the inning, scored when Falcons' first baseman Missy Bowman left sophomore Tiffany Smith's groundball go between her legs.
Junior shortstop Ashley Taylor and junior second baseman Brittany Williams had the other two Lady Govs hits on Sunday.
Sunday also saw the return of senior pitcher Lacey Briscoe, who had shoulder surgery this past spring and got the final out of the top of the fifth inning.
