Lady Govs track to host season's second home meet

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University women's track and field team will host the Austin Peay Invitational, Saturday, at Governors Stadium, beginning at 8 a.m.  with the track events. The field events will begin at noon and admission is free.

Competing, in addition to Austin Peay, will be Evansville, Lipscomb, Samford, Tennessee Tech, Tennessee State and Western Kentucky, among others.

“We've had a really good week of practice,” said head coach Doug Molnar. “We've got a chance to grab some more regional qualifiers this weekend.”

Junior Carrie Burggraf, who has qualified for the NCAA Regional twice in the pole vault, will lead the Lady Govs in this meet. Fellow junior Molly Bartkiewicz hopes to join her after improving her marks in the pole vault each week.

On the track, junior Amanda McCoy (hurdles) and senior Bertha Castillo (1500-meter run) look to improve their standing in the conference, while freshman Jasmine Scott and sophomore Chiamaka Obi form a tough one-two combination in the 400-meter run.

“The pole vault and the 100-meter hurdles should have some solid performers this week,” said Molnar. “Molly and Amanda will be a part of that; both of them could grab a regional qualifying spot this week. We need to keep getting better. A rocking horse works hard but doesn't get anywhere ? we need to get somewhere fast.”
