ATLANTA Ga. - Austin Peay State
University's volleyball team was unable to post a victory in its second day at
the Georgia Tech Regency Suites Invitational, Saturday. The Lady Govs fell to
host Georgia Tech, 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-17), in the opener before falling to
Georgia, 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-23) in the finale.
Austin Peay (1-2) saw Georgia
Tech scoring runs doom its chances in each of the match's three sets. In the
opening set the Lady Govs were within two points, 19-17, before the Yellow
Jackets scored six of the final seven points en route to a 25-19 victory. In
the second set Georgia Tech scored eight consecutive points to break an 8-8 tie
into a 16-8 advantage which it would not relinquish, winning the set 25-18. The
Lady Govs also battled to an 11-11 tie in the third set before a 8-1 Yellow
Jackets burst ended the threat.
The Lady Govs offense was
limited to 27 kills in the first match, finishing with a .099 attack
percentage. Senior opposite hitter Kirstin Distler led the squad with nine
kills while senior outside hitter Stephanie Champine added eight kills.
Monique Mead led Georgia Tech
(2-0) with 11 kills and added 10 digs for her season's second double-double. The
Yellow Jackets posted 40 kills and a .268 attack percentage in the victory.
Austin Peay fell behind early
in the first two sets of its match against Georgia (2-1). They trailed 14-7 in
the opening set before falling 25-14 and fell behind 17-8 in the second set en
route to a 25-19 loss. However, The Lady Govs stormed out of the mid-match
break and led 9-4, a lead they would maintain up to a 13-9 advantage before the
Bulldogs responded. Georgia scored the next six points to take a 15-13 lead
which it would maintain. Austin Peay would use a 7-2 scoring run to tie the
set, 23-23, but a timeout killed the momentum and allowed Georgia to score the
match's final two points.
Junior Jessica Mollman led the
Lady Govs with seven kills, nearly a third of the team's 23 kills. Sophomore
Taylor Skinner had three kills and four service aces.
Simone May led Georgia with 11
kills, no errors and a .500 attack percentage off the bench. The Bulldogs
finished with 39 kills and a .310 attack percentage.
Austin Peay returns to action
next weekend when it travels to Milwaukee, Wis., for the Marquette Challenge.
