FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Austin Peay State University women's soccer lost 2-1 to Air Force in its final game at the Razorback Adidas Classic, Sunday. The Lady Govs open the home portion of the schedule with a 7 p.m., Tuesday, game at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.
All of the game's offense came in the first 45 minutes, with Austin Peay (0-3) taking an early lead. Freshman Danielle Roos served a ball behind the Falcon defense to senior Lauren Moon. After taking control of the possession, Moon fired a shot past the keeper, off the back post, from about 25 yards out to give the Lady Govs a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute. That kind of assertiveness is what Austin Peay head coach Kelley Guth stressed in their most recent training session.
“We've spent so much time focusing on defense,” Guth said.” Wwith such a young group, we're now starting to concentrate on being aggressive and executing on the attack. We spent (Saturday) working on getting numbers forward and attacking more aggressively. (The goal) was a direct result of good build up. We won the ball and did a good job possessing it.”
Air Force (1-2-1), meanwhile, scored both of its goals off corner kicks. The first was a header by Kim Koeppen off Stephanie Patterson's corner in the 27th minute that tied the game. The game-winner came as a result of another Patterson corner kick in the 38th minute. Anna Lowe was credited with beating the Austin Peay keeper to put Air Force on top, 2-1.
The second half was a defensive battle, with neither team gaining much of an offensive advantage. Austin Peay, in fact, came up empty on a two corners in the game's final ten minutes.
“We did a poor job defending the corners today,” Guth said. “I feel that we turned a corner this weekend, even though we didn't get the results. We had four freshman (Jazzmine Chandler, Laurena Robinson, Stephanie Weider and Danielle Roos) play 90 minutes for us today. We had a number of opportunities in the last stretch where we got in behind the defense, but we couldn't get a quality shot.”
