FORT MYERS, Fla. – Austin Peay State University women's soccer was shutout, 2-0, at Florida Gulf Coast, Sunday, to wrap up its swing through the Sunshine State. The Lady Govs fell to 1-5-1, while the Eagles improved to 4-2-1.
For the third consecutive loss, the Lady Govs failed to score a goal – this time being outshot 22-2. An Austin Peay foul in the box set up a penalty kick for the Eagles to account for their first goal. Amber McCall beat the Austin Peay keeper, in the 21st minute, to give Florida Gulf Coast a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles attack was strong and steady as they tallied 11 shots in each half. In the second frame, the Eagles capitalized off a loose rebound. Jess Swartzentruber's first shot was saved, but Kelli Haemmelman gave the deflection right back to her. Swartzentruber punched it in the back of the net, setting the final 2-0 margin.
“After the penalty kick, the game never seemed to come back our way,” Lady Govs head coach
Kelley Guth said. “The game just wasn't well-played on our part. We didn't show up today. I'm disappointed with the result and we addressed it as a team. We have to move on and concentrate on getting better for next week.”
Austin Peay keeper
Carley Newman made a season-high nine saves. Midfielders
Samantha Northrup and
Danielle Roos accounted for the Lady Govs two shots.
The Lady Govs return to the pitch with a 7 p.m., Friday match hosting Middle Tennessee. All Austin Peay home games are free and open to the public.
