Late surge spoils OVC opener for Lady Govs soccer

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University women's soccer dropped its Ohio Valley Conference opening match, 2-1, to Morehead State, Friday, at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field. The Lady Govs fall to 1-8-1 overall with a 0-1 OVC clip, while the Eagles improve to 4-5-1 with a 1-0 league mark.

The loss marked the second time in the past five years the Lady Govs have lost the OVC opener.

Austin Peay's Monique Wong etched her name in the record books, putting the Lady Govs on top, 1-0, in the first minute at the 25-second mark. Wong scored immediately following the opening kickoff, which is the fastest goal scored in an Austin Peay match. The previous record was set by Melissa Aquino (1:52), Oct. 10, 2003 vs. Campbellsville.

Wong's score set the pace for a well-played half for the Lady Govs. At the break, both teams had five shots, while Austin Peay keeper Carley Newman had three of her six saves.

In the second half both teams played steady, waiting for opportunities. Morehead State's opportunity came with 10 minutes left to play. The Lady Govs, who played only 13 players in the match, began to show their lack of depth toward the game's end. The Eagles took advantage on a missed clearance and Devan Jordan went left-to-right in the box, beating the APSU defense and tying game at 1-1 in the 80th minute.

The game-winner game in a similar situation, in the 88th minute, on a ball served into the box. Courtney Moriarty put in the back of the net to put Morehead State on top, 2-1. As the Lady Govs attempted to create a scoring situation in the final two minutes, the Eagles proceed to clear each ball out of bounds to end the match.

Wong led Austin Peay with four shots, while Samantha Northrup finished with two. Jordan and Erin Adams each had two shots for Morehead State, while Adams also assisted the game-winner. The Eagles outshot the Lady Govs, 12-8.

Austin Peay returns to action with a 2 p.m., Sunday, match against Eastern Kentucky. The Lady Colonels will come to Morgan Brothers Soccer Field well-rested, having not played a Friday match.
