Lady Govs finish perfect Friday with sweep of Binghamton

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Senior outside hitter Stephanie Champine led all hitters with 12 kills and Austin Peay State University's volleyball team completed a perfect Friday with a three-set sweep (25-13, 25-19, 25-13) of Binghamton, Friday afternoon in match three the Marquette Invitational.

Austin Peay (3-2) was in control throughout the match and trailed just once in the three sets - a 3-1 deficit in the second set. The Lady Govs posted 40 kills in the victory and committed just seven errors while finishing with a .295 attack percentage. Austin Peay finished its first day at the tournament with 80 kills and - in a testament to their accurate hitting - posted a .299 attack percentage with just 17 errors.

"I was really happy with our performance today," said Lady Govs head coach Mike Johnson. "We played clean, crisp Austin Peay volleyball in both matches today. We executed the way we have been practicing since I got here six months ago and it showed on the scoreboard."

Champine recorded her 12 kills while committing one error and led the Lady Govs with a .407 attack percentage. Senior opposite hitter Kirstin Distler chipped in eight kills while sophomore outside hitter Ilyanna Hernandez added nine kills.

"We got a lot of great performances today," said Johnson. "A lot of different people stepped up and gave us top notch efforts. It's rewarding to see this team perform the way it's capable."

Binghamton (2-2) never got on track offensively and finished the match with 27 kills and 27 errors for a .000 attack percentage. Anna Lejina led the Bearcats with 11 kills while Michelle McDonough chipped in nine kills.

Austin Peay returns to action, Saturday, with a pair of matches. The Lady Govs meet Texas State in a 1 p.m., Saturday contest before squaring off against host Marquette in a 7:30 p.m. marquee appearance.

"We looking forward to tomorrow," Johnson said. "Texas State and Marquette had a great match earlier and both look to be good opponents. We have to go out and mind what we do and the results will take care of themselves."
