JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Austin
Peay State University women's basketball team ended a seven-game road losing
streak with a 78-70 Ohio Valley Conference victory at Jacksonville State,
Saturday afternoon at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Austin Peay (7-13, 6-3
OVC) won on the road for the first time since winning its road-opener, Nov. 17,
at Lipscomb. It also was the Lady Govs first OVC road victory this season.
The game's first 10
minutes were nip-and-tuck as Austin Peay and Jacksonville State traded the lead
three times and battled through two ties.
Austin Peay took
control of the first half with a 20-7 run over a 7:27 span to build a 14-point,
36-22, lead with 2:56 remaining in the period. Six different Lady Govs players
scored during the burst, junior Brooke Faulkner scoring eight points. Austin
Peay carried a 13-point, 40-27, advantage into halftime.
Jacksonville State
(6-13, 3-6) did not go down without a fight in the second half. The Gamecocks
used a 19-5 run over a six and half minute span to cut the lead to three
points, 51-48, with 11:54 left. Danielle Vaughn scored six points during the
burst and Paris Hollingsworth chipped in five points.
The Lady Govs turned to
their front-court players to stem the Gamecocks push with a 13-5 run. Senior
Nicole Jamen scored six points, freshman Meghan Bussabarger added a pair of
fast-break baskets, and sophomore Jasmine Rayner added three points as Austin
Peay built an 11-point, 64-53, lead with 7:11 left. That push provided Austin
Peay with a comfortable margin as the lead would not fall below six points the
game's remainder.
Jamen led the Lady Govs
in both scoring (18) and rebounding (12) for her fourth double-double in her
last seven games. Faulkner chipped in 17 points, making five three-point field
goals. Rayner added 16 points and eight rebounds while junior Ashley Herring
finished with 12 points.
Destiny Lane led
Jacksonville State with 16 points, scoring 14 in the second half. Vaughn added
14 points.
Austin Peay returns
home to begin a brief two-game homestand, beginning with a 5:15 p.m., Thursday
contest against Eastern Kentucky.
