Morehead State needs OT to wash Govs

MOREHEAD, Ky. - Austin Peay State University men's basketball team rallied late to force overtime but couldn't complete the comeback as it fell to Morehead State, 68-65, in a sloppily-played Ohio Valley Conference game telecast by ESPNU.

The loss drops the Governors to 8-7 overall and 2-1 in the OVC while Morehead State also moves to 2-1 in the league and 7-6 overall.

APSU and Morehead State found themselves in a near repeat of the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship game-APSU lost that contest 67-65 in double overtime.

Caleb Brown, who hit the runner to force overtime in the OVC tournament, knocked down a pair of free-throws with six seconds to play, tying the game at 56-56 sending the game to the extra period. APSU rallied from 11-point deficit in the final 8:49 to force overtime.

In overtime, the Govs never led. In fact, Austin Peay trailed by four points, 63-59, after a Steve Peterson jumper with 2:56 to play. Brown made a free throw and later assisted on a long three-pointer by Anthony Campbell to tie the game.

Morehead State made 5 of 6 from the free-throw line the rest of the way, including two key Kenneth Faried free throws with 1:34 left. With the Eagles clinging to a 64-63 lead, the OVC Preseason Player of the Year rebounded a missed Maze Stallworth free throw and was fouled. He sank both to give free throws to give the Eagles a three-point advantage. APSU could never get closer than one point in the final minute.

Other than Campbell, who scored eight of the Govs nine overtime points, Austin Peay struggled from the floor in the extra session, missing three shots in the final minute, including a desperation fall-away three-point attempt by Campbell as time expired.

Campbell scored a career- and game-high 24 points, while Wesley Channels added 19 points and John Fraley, 10. Channels also finished with six rebounds, six assists and six steals. Fraley led the Govs with seven rebounds.

Faried ended with 12 points and 19 rebounds while Demonte Harper also had 12 points. Terrance Hill came off the bench to lead Morehead State with 13 points-10 more points alone than APSU's bench produced.

Morehead State outrebounded the Governors 43-32 while the defensive battle saw the Eagles commit 23 turnovers and the Govs 17.
