CLARKSVILLE - Sophomore Henrique Norbiato won
the top singles draw and partnered with sophomore Sean Bailey to win the top
doubles draw at Austin Peay State University's Winter Fling, this weekend.
Norbiato lost in the Flight A championship,
Sept. 25, at the Austin Peay Invitational, but was able to close the deal this
weekend. He won his opening-round match in straight sets before a three-set
battle in the second round with Bailey. Norbiato gave up the middle set to
Bailey, but held on to advance. He would go on to take the title in straight
sets over Lipscomb's Oliver Strecker.
The three-set match with Norbiato was Bailey's
second in as many rounds. In his first match, he dropped the opening set to
Lipscomb's David Salazar, but showed great poise in winning the next two sets.
Freshman Jasmin Ademovic advanced to the second round as well, before falling
to Strecker in straight sets.
That set up a third-place match between
Bailey and Ademovic, which turned out to be Bailey's third three-set match.
Ademovic won the first set, but Bailey again came from behind to win the final
two sets for third place.
In other singles action, freshman John Storie
advanced to the championship match in Flight B, falling to Lipscomb's Mario
Hernandez. Sophomore Drew Kerr lost his Flight C opening-round match, while
sophomore Peter Conaty fell in the semis to Western Kentucky's Robert Whitmer
in three sets.
Norbiato and Bailey continued their strong
doubles play, winning each of their matches without allowing more than five
games to an opponent. Ademovic and Storie also played well, picking up wins
against teams from Murray State and Lipscomb, before falling to Norbiato and
Bailey, 8-3, in the championship.
