Governors hold off UT Martin, 74-69

MARTIN, Tenn.-John Fraley and Anthony Campbell recorded double-doubles as Austin Peay State University held off determined UT Martin, 74-69, Thursday night in Ohio Valley Conference action played at the Elam Center.

The duo each scored 13 points while Fraley grabbed-matching his season high-while Campbell added 10 as APSU won its fourth straight to improve to 14-10 overall and 8-4 in the OVC. It was the fourth time in the last five games Fraley has recorded double-figure rebounds.

UT Martin fell to 3-18 and 0-11 in the OVC. However, the Skyhawks certainly didn't look like the conference's winless team, especially in the second half as UTM scored 45 points, one more than it scored in Saturday's entire game against Murray State. Marquis Weddle scored 17 of his game-high 23 points in the second half.

The Govs, who led 64-54 with 4:12 left, watched the lead shrink to three, 72-69, with 39 seconds left but Wesley Channels, who led the Govs with 17 points, made two of four free throws in the final 21 seconds to hold on for the victory.

APSU jumped out to double-digit lead, 20-10, with 8:19 left in the first half and pushed it to 18, 33-15, with 2:45 remaining before UTM outscored the Govs 9-2 the rest of the half to cut the deficit 35-24 at halftime.

The Skyhawks kept that momentum in the second half, shooting 56.7 percent (17 of 30) while staying with striking distance. APSU also shot 50 percent (13 of 26) in the final half.  Justin Blake, the OVC Freshman of the Week, scored all 15 of his points in the final half to give APSU a lift.

The Govs finished the night shooting 42.6 percent (26 of 61), including only 28.6 percent (8 of 28) from three-point range, while outrebounding the Skyhawks, 40-31, including 16 offensive grabs. APSU committed just seven turnovers but UTM only had five.
