Return to Grub Mart Intercollegiate next up for Golf Govs

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.. – Austin Peay men's golf team will face a familiar course when it returns to the links for the Grub Mart Golf Intercollegiate, hosted by Jacksonville State, beginning Monday at Silver Lakes Golf Course.

A Robert Trent Jones course, located between Anniston and Gadsen, Ala., Silver Lakes will play at approximately 6,649 yards. The layout and design is comfortable for the Govs, who not only won the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Championship on a Robert Trent Jones course, but also won the Grub Mart Intercollegiate, last season.

“We are looking forward to playing a golf course that four of our six players have played before,” head coach Kirk Kayden said.  “It is always a big advantage when you have seen a golf course before; it seems to give you some confidence. I hope that we can build off last year's experience.”

Granted, the event was rained shortened to only 36 holes, Austin Peay won with a four-under par 572. Senior Erik Barnes and then-senior Matt Coles each finished at two under par, tied for second, while junior Brian Balthrop was even, tied for seventh.

That is all in the rear-view mirror for a Govs golf team that has battled its own demons throughout the 2010 season. Through nine events, Barnes leads the team with a 72.60 stroke average and will play at No. 1 this week. Junior Luke Sherrod will play at No. 2 followed by sophomore Drew Miller and freshman Dustin Korte. Balthrop will be the Govs final golfer after a rough tournament in Louisiana.
