JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Austin Peay men's tennis team came up empty on its first look at Ohio Valley Conference action, falling 6-1 at Jacksonville State, Saturday afternoon.
The Gamecocks (4-6, 1-1 OVC) jumped on the Govs in doubles action with a clean sweep. Freshman
Amar Subasic and sophomore
Renan Bezerra came up just short at No. 2 doubles, falling in a tiebreaker. It was the first time this seaon for the Govs have been shut out in doubles play.
"We didn't show up and that bothers me a lot," head coach Malik Tabet said. "We have to be mentally tougher and execute. There were too many easy matches for JSU."
The Govs (2-2, 0-1 OVC) struggled mightily in singles play as well. Freshman
Sean Bailey lost in a super-tiebreaker at No. 1 singles and freshman
Henrique Norbiato picked up the Govs lone win, in straight sets, at No. 3. The rest of the Govs lost straight-set matches.
Tabet hopes that his young team can take something away from this match other than the fact it was their first time to play outdoors in the spring season.
"It was disappointing to see the guys lose this way," Tabet said. "We can't just come out here and go through the motions. That's something we're going to address over the next week."
Austin Peay returns to action with a 2 p.m., Wednesday, match at South Alabama in Mobile, Ala.
