Wind an issue, but Lady Govs tennis downs Racers

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay women's tennis squeaked by Murray State, 4-3, Tuesday, in a windy day of Ohio Valley Conference women's action.

The win was the Lady Govs eighth straight overall and sixth straight in OVC play. With only two league matches left on the slate, Austin Peay now has to avoid complacency when facing last-place Tennessee State, Wednesday, and Eastern Illinois - which currently has only two league wins.

"We're at the end of the season now," head coach Malik Tabet said. "We have to put our work in, but there are other things more important than tennis. I've stressed to them, for the trip to Eastern Illinois, that we need to use the travel time to get our rest and study. Then, we'll have a week to get ready for the conference tournament."

Winning the doubles point ultimately saved the match for the Lady Govs against the Racers. Sophomore Vanja Tomic and senior Mariana Pagan won the deciding match after Nos. 2 and 3 split - the Lady Govs tandem of senior Yuki Nakamura and freshman Carolin Weikard winning at No. 2. Tomic and Pagan took an early lead in the match before the Racers evened the score and eventually taking a 6-5 lead. The Lady Govs, however, were relentless in winning the next three games to take the set 8-5, in come-from-behind fashion.

On the singles side, Tomic and Weikard played strong in winning the top two matches in straight sets. It was Tomic's 12th-straight win. Pagan, meanwhile, struggled and lost only her second match of the dual season. Senior Michelle Liew rebounded from a lost to Morehead State, winning in straight sets to seal the match.

"I knew it was going to be a difficult match," Tabet said. "The weather was horrible, with a lot of wind. We had a tough weekend with a lot of expectations. The players were kind of out it today, but they did a good job of keeping their composure and bringing the points home early."
