Box Score TROY, Ala. - Sophomore Jocelyn Murdoch scored
two goals, but Austin Peay State University women's soccer team lost, 5-2, to
Troy, Sunday, in the final game of the Troy Invitational. Not only was it the
season's first loss, it also marked the first goals scored against the Lady
Govs in 2010.
"It was a struggle for us," head coach Kelley Guth said."Troy did a good job putting pressure on us and we just didn't
respond to it. There were moments where I thought we were in it, but we just
didn't come out to play. We have to play consistent for 90 minutes and we didn't
do that today."
The Trojans capitalized on a corner kick to
score in the sixth minute and take an early lead, only to find the back of the
net again in the 23rd minute to go ahead, 2-0. Murdoch brought
Austin Peay closer with a 41st minute goal to make 2-1 before
halftime.
A one-goal game at the half had the Lady Govs
in a seemingly good position, but rather than build on Murdoch's late
first-half momentum, Austin Peay allowed another quick goal to Troy only three
minutes into the frame. Murdoch scored again in the 78th minute, but
the Lady Govs simply failed to match Troy's intensity.
"Troy is a good team and they put us under
early pressure," Guth said. "We didn't step up and I don't feel that we were
ready to play. We got into an early hole and didn't respond well."
The loss brought Austin Peay's five-game win
streak to an end, while their shutout minutes ends at 456:18. Both stand as
program records.
Austin Peay continues road play, next week,
at the Jacksonville State Invitational, hosted by Ohio Valley Conference member
Jacksonville State. The Lady Govs will play Southern and Southeastern
Louisiana.
