Box Score MURRAY, Ky. - A pair of second-half goals by sophomore
Tatiana Ariza fueled a 2-1, comeback win, by Austin Peay State University women's
soccer team against Murray State, Sunday, in Ohio Valley Conference play.
With the score tied, 1-1, Austin Peay established an attack
directly in front of the Murray State goal. The Racer's physical play caught up
with them as sophomore Joceline Quiceno was pulled down in the box with a clean
look at the goal. The foul gave way to Ariza's game-winning penalty kick in the
89th minute.
Ariza scored the Lady Govs' first goal in the 78th
minute when she drew a foul inside the penalty box.
"It was a good match for us against a really good team,"
head coach Kelley Guth said. "Murray State is a physically team and we're not
any better off health-wise coming out of this game than we were going in. We
needed this win to shift some momentum in our direction."
The win ended a three-game skid by the Lady Govs and also
was their first OVC win. Murray State remains winless in league play.
Murray State led, 1-0, at the half after Julie Mooney scored
in the game's fifth minute. Over the past three games, Austin Peay had
struggled with allowing early goals, but this time the Lady Govs were able to
overcome.
"Our team gritted it out at the end," Guth said. "We gave up
the early goal again, and that was disappointing. We played a good second half
and showed some resiliency today."
After going three games without goal, Ariza posted her
season's fourth multi-goal game. Ariza leads the Lady Govs with 13 goals,
having scored in every Austin Peay win this season.
Austin Peay now has a week off before their next match. The
Lady Govs return to action, Oct.14, when they head to Jacksonville State to
continue OVC play.
"This next week off is going to be very important for us,"
Guth said. "We're going to use it trying to get some players healthy and
getting ready to play hard down the stretch. Every conference game is a battle and
we have to be ready for that."
