Box Score MOREHEAD, Ky.- Austin Peay State University women's
soccer team suffered a season-ending, 7-2, loss at Morehead State, Sunday
afternoon, which led to the Lady Govs elimination from the Ohio Valley
Conference tournament field.
"We really played our worst game of the season today," head coach Kelley Guth said. "It's disappointing. We have a young team and they cracked under pressure. We needed to have someone step up today and didn't happen."
For
the second consecutive season, Morehead State (9-7-3; 4-4-1 OVC) has helped bring Austin Peay's (9-8-1; 3-5-1 OVC)
soccer season to an end. Last year, however, it was a 2-1 defeat in the OVC
Tournament championship game.
Sunday's
game had different implications with both teams battling to get into the
postseason. The Lady Govs found their backs against the wall early as the
Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute on a header by Jillian Birchmeier.
Brittany Kiracofe's header in the 21st minute made a 2-0.
Sophomore
Tatiana Ariza cut the margin to one goal when she lined up for a penalty kick
in the 29th minute, making 2-1. The Lady Govs momentum didn't last
long as Morehead would go on to score two more goals to take a 4-1 lead into
halftime.
In
the second half, Morehead State scored three more goals before sophomore
Natalia Ariza's 74th-minute goal. Ariza beat two defenders and the
keeper to set the final margin.
For
Austin Peay, it was the only time this season to lose when scoring at least two
goals. The Lady Govs managed only eight shots on the day, including two each by
junior Jocelyn Murdoch and sophomore Joceline Quiceno.
Morehead
State fired up 16 shots on the day, led by Birchmeier and Kiracofe. It was the
fifth time of the final six games for the Lady Govs to allow 10 or more shots
to an opponent.
