CLARKSVILLE- Austin Peay State University men's
tennis team had the weather derail a potential outdoor match against Western
Kentucky, but upon moving indoors the Govs came away with a 7-0 sweep of the
Hilltoppers, Friday.
The Govs were dominant in putting away
Western Kentucky, winning both doubles matches with 8-2 margins and taking each
singles match in straight sets.
"After the way things went at Xavier, I feel
like the guys were a lot more focused today," head coach Malik Tabet said. "They
wanted to redeem themselves and they came out playing determined tennis."
Sophomores Henrique Norbiato and Sean Bailey
bounced back after a loss at Xavier to pick up a win against Robert Whitmer and
Arul Selvan at No. 1 doubles. Freshman Jasmin Ademovic teamed with sophomore
Drew Kerr for a win at No. 2 doubles. Ademovic's usual partner, freshman Remi Calleja did not play today.
"We kept Remi out today, but he'll be back in
the lineup tomorrow," Tabet said. "We played solid tennis. We're trying to get
back the momentum we've had and we played well today."
In the singles, Austin Peay won the top four
matches without any set going past three games. Without Calleja, freshman Joao Pagan played at No. 4 singles, earning a win against Lance Freeman. Bailey,
meanwhile, worked a straight-set win against Western Kentucky's Currie Martin
and Norbiato handed Selvan his season's first loss at No. 2 singles.
Austin Peay will host SIU Edwardsville,
Saturday, with hopes of being able to take the match outdoors with a noon
start. A contingency plan exists, should the weather come into play, to play
the match indoors at 2 p.m.
