CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State
University women's tennis team defeated Belmont, 4-3, to earn its season's
first win, Friday, at the Governors Indoor Tennis Center.
The Lady Govs won the doubles point and took
the top three singles matches to pick up the win. Perhaps the Lady Govs'
biggest challenge through the early part of the season was determining
combinations on the doubles side. In fact, Friday's win also marked the first
doubles point win through eight matches.
Vanja Tomic and Alison Carre handled No. 1
doubles with a decisive 8-4 victory. After dropping No. 3 doubles, the point
rested on the No. 2 doubles outcome. Andra Cornea and Ornella Di Salvo came
through, earning an 8-3 win
In singles, the match played true as the Lady
Govs dominated the top three matches. Tomic blanked Belmont's Fabiana Mersan at
No. 1 while Carre moved down to No. 3 singles to pick up her season's first
win.
DiSalvo, who moved up to play No. 2 singles,
allowed only three games in the first set to Belmont's Nikki Maciel with her
match proving to be the game winner for the Lady Govs.
Austin Peay returns to action, Saturday, when
the Govs and Lady Govs host Lipscomb. In fact, prior to the match Austin Peay
is hosting a free tennis clinic beginning at 9 a.m., open to all kids
interested in playing tennis.
