CLARKSVILLE
- Austin Peay State University women's track and field team continues the
outdoor season at Vanderbilt's Black and Gold Invitational, Friday and Saturday, at the
Vanderbilt Track Complex.
Among the 19
teams competing are host Vanderbilt, Southern Illinois, Saint Louis, Memphis,
Lipscomb and Western Kentucky, along with Ohio Valley Conference members
Southeast Missouri, Murray State and Tennessee Tech.
"This meet
in only its second year has really grown and will be very competitive," head
coach Doug Molnar said. "We're taking a small group, giving our distance
runners off and resting a few others that are banged up."
In all,
Austin Peay will compete in 10 events, participating in the 200-, 400- and
800-meter runs, along with 100- and 400-meter hurdles on the track. In the
field events, the Lady Govs will be in the high and long jump as well as the
pole vault, shot put and hammer throw.
In the field
events, Molnar is expecting a strong performance from senior Tanesha Campbell -
the Lady Govs only All-OVC honoree during the indoor season. Campbell spent the
indoor season extending the APSU shot put record, and after one outdoor meet,
already owns the APSU outdoor mark at 13.96 meters.
"We'll be
looking for strong marks in the shot put and the hammer from Tanesha," Molnar
said. "Her practices have been going well and she's ready to throw far."
Senior
Candace Johnson is slated to run the 200- and 400-meter dash, looking to
improve her 59.25 400-meter time set at Coastal Carolina. It will be Johnson's
first outdoor 200-meter race this season. Alyx Pinkston also will run the 200-
and 400-meters, along with Kelly Colbert.
Chantelle Grey is making her first appearance in the 400-meters after a terrific indoor
season where she primarily ran the 800-meters and the relays. Last week at
Coastal Carolina, Grey set a personal-best in the 1500-meter run at 4:42.99.
Taelor Slaughter, meanwhile, will be making her first attempt at the 400-meter
hurdles.
