Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - A late goal deprived Austin Peay State
University's women's soccer team of its first-ever decision against Arkansas,
Friday night. The Lady Govs fell to the Razorbacks 2-1 in the 2012 regular-season
opener.
"We made huge strides from our game against Evansville to
today," said head coach Kelley Guth. "Obviously we were hoping for a different
result but I couldn't have been prouder of how the girls played tonight."
Arkansas (1-0-0) assaulted the net in the early going. The
Razorbacks attempted 11 shots, putting eight on net in the opening 45 minutes.
The Lady Govs (0-1-0) had fewer chances in the first half,
but were able to find holes in the Arkansas defense. In the 32nd minute, senior
Sara Kluttz unleashed a shot that beat Arkansas net minder Kelly Roliard but
hit the post and bounced away, keeping the Lady Govs off the board.
The Razorbacks would break the scoreless tie in the 36th
minute. Ashleigh Ellenwood got behind
the Lady Govs backline on a breakaway and beat Shoaff low and to the right to
give Arkansas a 1-0 lead late in the first half. That would be the only blemish
in a busy first half for Shoaff, who made seven saves in the opening period.
The Lady Govs would get the equalizer late in the first
half. Junior Andy Quiceno was dragged down in the box, resulting in a penalty
kick for Austin Peay. Junior Morgan Zigelsky put the kick away for the Lady
Govs, tying the match up going into the break.
Junior Joceline Quiceno brought the Govs offense to life
early in the second half, rocketing a shot off the post within the first 30
seconds of the second period. Zigelsky also put a shot on net in the 69th
minute.
The Razorbacks kept the pressure up on the Lady Govs
defense, and finally broke through in the 82nd minute. A poor clear attempt by
Austin Peay allowed Phyllis George to put a shot past Shoaff for the
game-winner.
Shoaff faced 20 shots, including 12 on goal, and made 10
saves in the season opener. Seven Razorbacks took more than one shot, with
Lindsey Mayo attempting four and putting two on net.
"Having Haylee back there was huge for us today," Guth said.
"She made at least three game-changing saves.
The Lady Govs offense took nine shots, but only two were on
net. Joceline Quiceno attempted three shots. Zigelsky was the only Lady Gov to
put a shot on goal.
"A lot of different girls got an opportunity to step up and
perform tonight," Guth said. "We'll build on this performance going into
Sunday."
Austin Peay resumes the season-opening Arkansas road trip at
1 p.m., Sunday, in Little Rock against Sun Belt foe UALR.
