Late goals doom Lady Govs against Morehead State

Box Score

CLARKSVILLE – Despite taking an early two-goal lead into halftime, Austin Peay State University dropped a 3-2 decision to Morehead State, Friday, in what was truly a tale of two halves.

Austin Peay (9-3-2, 4-2-1 OVC) now finds itself on a two-match losing streak in Ohio Valley Conference play for the first time since the opening matches of the 2012 conference schedule against Murray State and UT Martin. With three road games left in what is still a very wide-open OVC race, Austin Peay now finds itself in third place with 13 points, behind Eastern Illinois (18) and UT Martin (15) – both of whom the Lady Govs have defeated in 2013.

As they so often have, Austin Peay took the early lead and looked poised to take the game over in the first half. In the 32nd minute, senior Andy Quiceno scored her season's fourth goal on a through ball from junior Claire Pultz that she took low for the score. Quiceno has come on strong of late, scoring three times in the last five games.

The goal was the 14th of Quiceno's career, tying her with Jessica Hosse (2004-07) and Emily Perkins (2011-12) for third all-time.

Less than a minute later, junior defender Shelby Olszewski headed home a nice cross from freshman Gina Fabbro for her season's third goal and with it, a 2-0 lead that Austin Peay would take into halftime.

“I thought we played a good first half,” said head coach Kelley Guth. “The game changed in the second half and we let them back into it.”

But the second half would be all about Morehead State (5-9-1, 4-2-0 OVC). Angela Black got it started in the 51st minute, taking a long run and firing it low past sophomore keeper Nikki Filippone for the goal.

Seven minutes later, the Eagles Jade Flory went on a run of her own, assisted by Holley Tilley. Filippone challenged the play but Flory was able to get past her and put the ball in the net to tie the match at two apiece.

Despite surrendering two goals in a match for just the second time in the 2013 regular season, Austin Peay had its chances to re-take the lead during the second half. A low liner from senior Morgan Zigelsky was just barely knocked away from the net by Morehead State's Elizabeth Floyd, and a header from junior Frankie Carbajal was cleared off the line by the Eagle defense.

The contest appeared destined for overtime, but Morehead State had other ideas. Black and Flory got out ahead of the Lady Gov defense, with Flory scoring the game-winner with just 17 seconds remaining in the game.

For just the second time in Austin Peay history, the Lady Govs lost a match after taking a two-goal lead. On Oct. 27, 2005, Austin Peay dedicated Morgan Brothers Soccer Field before their final regular season contest against Evansville. The Lady Govs stormed out to a 2-0 lead before conceding four straight goals in an eventual 4-2 loss to the Purple Aces, and had not done that in 57 consecutive matches at Morgan Brothers entering Friday night.

The Lady Govs will have to rebound quickly with OVC Tournament seeding still at stake over the final three weekends. Austin Peay travels to Eastern Kentucky for a 12 p.m. (CT) Sunday tilt against the Colonels.
