Lights Out: Lady Govs dominate against UALR

Box Score

CLARKSVILLE – The lights went out in the 79th minute. But for Austin Peay, the first 78 minutes could not have been more electrifying.

Austin Peay State University women's soccer team added two more Tatiana Ariza goals after an early tally from freshman Gina Fabbro to get past Arkansas-Little Rock, 3-0, Friday, in a physical match that belonged to the Lady Govs almost from the outset.

The Lady Govs (3-0-0), who enjoy a three-match winning streak to open the regular season for the third time in the last four years, made it two in a row against UALR (2-1-0). It's the second shutout the Lady Govs have earned in three matches during this young season.

Fabbro set the tone early, breaking away near midfield and going the distance for her season's second goal. Austin Peay has not only scored first in every match this season, the Lady Govs have scored their opening salvo within the first 11 minutes of each match.

While the Lady Govs struck first, UALR proved a formidable defensive opponent for the remainder of the half, limiting Austin Peay's chances for the rest of the opening 45 minutes. Senior Morgan Zigelsky rifled a shot off the crossbar that went straight down but did not cross the chalk in the 40th minute for Austin Peay's only other true chance in the half.

The second half belonged to Ariza, with the Colombian netting two more goals to give her five in three 2013 matches. Her first, in the 53rd minute, came via a Zigelsky through-ball that UALR keeper Kylie Wilson tried to beat Ariza to. The senior forward collected it and all but dribbled it into an empty net to give the Lady Govs a bit of insurance.

Senior Andy Quiceno found Ariza on a cross to the left post in the 66th minute, where she buried it into the nylon for her second multi-goal game in 2013, and the 11th of her Austin Peay career.

Splitting time in net, sophomore Nikki Filippone (66 minutes) and freshman Katie Emig (13 minutes) made one save apiece to split the shutout. Wilson made two saves in a losing effort for the Trojans.

The game was called in the 79th minute following two light towers suddenly going out. The lights were later re-started and should be in working order for Austin Peay's next home match, a Sept. 27 affair against UT Martin that will open Ohio Valley Conference play and is a rematch of last season's OVC Tournament Championship match.

Between now and then, the Lady Govs will have four road matches, beginning at Western Kentucky (Sept. 5, 7 p.m.), with further trips to Lipscomb, St. Bonaventure and Buffalo.
