NASHVILLE – Austin Peay State University women's tennis team jumped out to an early lead but couldn't make it last against Lipscomb, Saturday, falling 4-3 to the Lady Bisons at Whitworth Indoor Tennis Center.
Austin Peay fell to 0-5 overall but the day was not without its bright spots, not least of which was winning the doubles point for the first time in 2014. Senior Andra Cornea and junior Ornella Di Salvo took the top slot against Deahnna Welcher and Jenny Borck, 6-2. Austin Peay's No. 3 duo of junior Jovana Karac and freshman Hannah Tatlock also took home a victory with a 6-3 win over Lorena Djuknic and Sierra Troxel.
Di Salvo won a grueling battle against Melissa Kromer at No. 2 singles, defeating the German 6-2, 3-6, 10-8. Di Salvo has now gone to a third-set tiebreaker in three of her five matches during the spring dual season.
No. 6 singles continues to be a strength for the Lady Govs. This time, freshman Isabela Jovanovic picked up her first career win with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Troxel. The Lady Govs No. 6 players are now 3-1 on the season.
Cornea forced Welcher to a third set with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-10 loss, but she was the only other Lady Gov to enter a tiebreaker.
The Lady Govs play two next weekend, hosting Western Kentucky in a Friday morning match at the APSU Tennis Center before traveling to Southern Indiana for a Saturday evening contest.
