BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University junior sprinter Breigh Jones has been named adidas®/Ohio Valley Conference Co-Female Track Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
The junior from Memphis shared the first weekly honor of the 2014-15 season with Eastern Illinois' Nyjah Lane after winning the 400m event at the MT Christmas Invite back on Dec. 6 with a 55.29 mark that was two-hundredths of a second behind her own school record.
Jones' outing was part of a strong showing by Austin Peay's track athletes in Murfreesboro. A Lady Gov won all four events shorter than a mile and posted runner-up honors in the 4x400-yard relay, in which Jones ran a leg, behind only a Middle Tennessee unit that placed third in the Sun Belt last season.
Jones enters this weekend's Niswonger Invitational at ETSU as the OVC's leader in the 400m by more than a second, and her run ranks her ninth nationally.
Despite being a two-time NCAA Regional qualifier in the 400m dash, this is just the second weekly honor Jones has earned from the OVC, the first coming for the week of Feb. 19, 2013. She's the first Austin Peay sprinter to earn weekly honors since Maikea Davis won for her performance the week of Jan. 22, 2014.
