#GovsGavel: Lady Govs road woes continue with loss at Morehead State

THE LEAD
MOREHEAD, Ky. – Senior Aubrey Marsellis posted her second double-digit kills outing of the season, but Austin Peay State University's volleyball team dropped a three-set (23-25, 20-25, 22-25) Ohio Valley Conference decision to Morehead State, Saturday, at Wetherby Gymnasium.

WHO GOVERNED
Marsellis' 13-kill performance was highlighted by a near-perfect third set when she recorded kills on all eight of her attack attempts. She finished the match with just one error for a .706 attack percentage – good for ninth best single-match attack percentage in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Morehead State controlled the first and second sets, posting 17 kills in each set along with a .500 attack percentage in the second frame.

Austin Peay roared out to a 7-3 lead in the third set and led 21-20 late in the set. However, the Eagles clinched the match with a 5-1 run that included three kills and a service ace.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Senior Samanta Strother joined Marsellis in double-digit territory, finishing with 10 kills and a .308 attack percentage. She added a team-best 15 digs for her team-leading third double-double this season.

Redshirt junior Sammie Ebright had four kills in an errorless attack outing (nine attempts) while freshman Kaylee Taff had five kills and posted a .400 attack percentage.

Austin Peay falls to 0-3 in league play and suffered its 11th consecutive road loss dating back to last season.

THE QUOTABLE MOTT
"Our offense was better today – we committed fewer attacking errors throughout the match. But our blocking and defense were nonexistent."

THE FULL RECAP
Austin Peay (5-13, 0-3 OVC) could not find a way to slow down a potent Morehead State attack throughout the match. The Eagles, led by freshman outside hitter Meredith Jewell, finished with 52 kills and a .408 attack percentage for the match – the second highest attack rate allowed by APSU this season.

Morehead State (5-13, 2-2 OVC) controlled the opening two sets. Jewell led off the contest with 10 kills and a .563 attack percentage in the opening set as the Eagles fended off an APSU challenges early and late to win 25-23. Middle blocker Hannah Sigala took over in a wire-to-wire second set win with six kills and no errors as the Eagles posted 17 kills and a .500 attack percentage in the frame.

Austin Peay found their stride in the third set as freshman setter Kristen Stucker found a connection with senior outside hitter Aubrey Marsellis. That duo combined for eight kills and no attack errors as APSU broke out to a 7-3 lead.

Morehead State slowly eased its way back into the set and tied the frame at 18-18. Austin Peay would hold the lead one final time at 21-20 but Morehead State closed with three kills and a service aces as part of a match-ending 5-1 run.

Marsellis led Austin Peay with 13 kills – her second double-digit kill total this season – and her .706 attack percentage was tied for the ninth-best in program history. Strother added 10 kills to pace an APSU offense that finished with 40 kills and a .276 attack percentage.

Jewell, the top hitter in the OVC, did little to dent her reputation with a match-best 18 kills and a .444 attack percentage. Sigala added 16 kills at a .682 attack percentage.

Austin Peay will seek to end its 11-match road losing streak with a 7 p.m., Wednesday contest at Murray.
